MAGGIE TOKUDA-HALL: I was an independent bookseller for a company called Books Inc., and I was a children's specialist in a store in San Francisco. Tokuda-Hall sat down with Shondaland to talk about finding inspiration for fantasy in reality, colonialism, gender fluidity, and writing about survival and hope. With dynamic prose and all kinds of plot twists, Mermaid is not only readable but also utterly engaging.
